You need to get a free VIN check. Why? Because lots of things happen to cars during their lives. Fender-benders, accidents, breakdowns, hailstorms, recalls, the list goes on and on. You don't want to buy a car that has had serious trouble in the past.

|
- You don't want a car that's been totaled
- You don't want a car that used to be a taxi
- You don't want a car that was a "Lemon"

So what do you do? Get a free VIN check. Armed with a VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) you can find out the number of entries there are for a particular car in the National Vehicle Database. These entries may include information about a used vehicle's title, DMV, odometer, major damage, theft, lemon, and insurance history.

Based on the number of records the free VIN search turns up, you can decide whether or not to purchase a full used car history report. The free VIN check provides the number of records found for the car you are interested in, but to find out the details for each of the records you must purchase the full report.
The full reports are available for around $20. That may seem like a lot, but compared to the money you can save by finding out about car problems ahead of time, it's a bargain. Wouldn't you like to know if the used car you're considering purchasing has been:
|

|
- Stolen or salvaged?
- In a flood, hailstorm or fire?
- A victim of potential odometer rollback?
- Used as a rental or fleet vehicle?
- Used as a police car?
- Used as a taxi?

The free VIN check, and the follow-up full history report, will tell you. You'll identify the potentially hidden problems with the car. Most importantly, you'll find everything you need to know about the car to make a good decision.
If the free VIN lookup reveals no records, then you may want to forego the full history report. Either way, most experts recommend bringing a mechanic or inspection company in to inspect the car before buying, just to make sure that the car was not altered or damaged in an incident that didn't make it in to the database that the free VIN check references.
